This year your student's spelling words have been generated from the "Words Their Way" spelling program. This program is based on the idea that students are more successful spellers when they focus on learning the pattern/rules of the English language, versus simply memorizing a word for a week only to forget it. Each student took a spelling assessment at the beginning of the year and these assessments were used to place students in one of three spelling groups based on need.
Spelling schedule: Monday-new lists received and sorted based on spelling pattern; weekly spelling "rule" is determined Monday night-Thursday-students use the spelling menu (see the tab above, under spelling) to complete 30 points worth of spelling practice with their list. Time will be given for this on Wednesday during the school day. Friday-differentiated spelling tests are given for each list. Only 10-13 words will be tested from the original list with a challenge word that follows the pattern, but was not on the weekly list.
